Koene to explore the appearance, gender, and related data of snails and humans. I edited the structure of the book, created the illustrations, and designed the book binding. The project started as a handmade book in 2022 and was later published by Limestone Books in 2024. Concept Development This bilingual book focuses on gender fluidity. Through black-and-white illustrations, it is divided into four chapters that explore the reproductive systems, structures, and mating positions of snails and humans. The cover design reflects the artist’s exploration of the idea of “normal” (正常）and “abnormal”（變態） by reversing the order of the Traditional Chinese characters in “變態的正常.”&nbsp; The book has two special printing details. On the cover, I used hot foil stamping to show the reflective slime of a snail, as if a snail had just crawled across the cover. The other detail comes from the fluorescent ink, which unexpectedly reveals a nocturnal ecosystem under UV light. Kamata uses vintage camera lenses, optical interfaces, and his own optical gems to explore light, refraction, and perception. Wong transforms leather through folding, layering, and delicate stitching, turning material, time, and traces of the body into sculptural forms that can be carried. The exhibition&nbsp;takes place at GRACE HAN Taipei Maison of Art from October 18, 2026 to Januany 17, 2027. Concept Development The key visual uses abstract forms rather than showing the artworks directly. It aims to create a “state of seeing.” The iridescent light reflects the optical refraction in Jiro Kamata’s work, while the soft, flowing shapes and moiré patterns connect to Grace Wong’s work. I then incorporated colors inspired by camera lenses and leather swatches to bring the two artists’ works together. One of the main challenges was combining their distinct qualities in a single image while creating a sense of transparency. I wanted to move away from the common practice of using artworks directly in applied arts exhibitions. The exhibition brings together the work of Ho Kan, a pioneer of geometric abstraction in the Chinese-speaking world, and Korean contemporary abstract artist Kwon Soonik. Starting from the idea of “writing,” the exhibition explores how artists use the hand, body, and materials to leave traces of time, action, and memory. The works go beyond words and lines, turning personal experiences and perceptions of life, identity, and the world into visual forms. Concept Development As four of the five artists are Traditional Chinese-language users, I decided with the curator to make Chinese character the main focus of the visual identity. The exhibiton&nbsp;took place in Taipei Fine Arts Museum from 11 May to 22 July, 2024.This pavilion is made of 25 tree-like columns with a light canopy. The structure gently sways, inviting people into a space beyond everyday life. The canopy creates a central space between the human-scale edges and tall columns. One 木 means “wood,” two 木 form 林, meaning “trees,” and three 木 form 森林, meaning “forest.” I treated the challenge of showing different stages, from a single piece of wood to a whole forest, across different assets as an important part of the visual identity. Concept DevelopmentThe smallest square element in the exhibition’s key visual is based on the largest grid layout in the plaza of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Using Processing, I developed a system that gradually transforms the square elements into the tree-like columns in the plaza. I then added a swinging motion that responds to the base of the columns. Like a roly-poly toy, the elements move rhythmically between the grid and the columns, creating an image of komorebi (木漏れ日)— the fleeting light that passes through the gaps between tree branches. &nbsp; &nbsp; The Visual Identity was not only applied to motion graphics but also extended to offline assets. For the opening invitation, I wanted to create a small interactive experience. When the envelope is opened, a line from Baudelaire’s Correspondances appears: “La Nature est un temple où de vivants piliers” — “Nature is a temple where living pillars stand.” The opening invitation card is made from two triangular columns. Once assembled, it becomes a small version of the movable tree-like columns in the plaza. It also invites people to come to the opening and “plant a tree.” For social media, I planned the Instagram layout so that trees are gradually “planted” across the grid, one by one, eventually forming a forest. In this way, the visual identity grows across the entire Instagram layout rather than staying within individual posts. <img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" Background The 18th edition of the CinemAsia Film Festival will take place from April 8–12, 2026, across Studio/K, Rialto De Pijp, and Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.As the world becomes more divided, CinemAsia’s 2026 theme, “COMMONS,” explores how empathy, shared experiences, and storytelling can help rebuild connections between people. The theme focuses on finding common ground and bridging the distance between different cultures and communities. &nbsp; &nbsp; Concept The requirements from CinemAsia was to use the brand’s “eye” symbol and the brand color orange in the main visual. I used flowing and connected colors to express ideas of coexistence, a sense of belonging, shared public space, and storytelling. For the motion design, I added a blinking movement to the eye. This gives the visual more attention and presence in today’s fast-moving visual culture. Challenge One challenge of this project was that not all of CinemAsia’s partners were familiar with graphic design software. I created Social Media Templates and a user guide in Canva, making the visual system easier for the team to use and adapt. The national flag, passport and banknote should be platforms of Taiwanese identity that reflect the country’s status and cultural identity. And indeed, they show an identity that is far from unambiguous. Next to the regular passport Taiwanese own a second passport for travels to China only. Alongside the national flag there is another one for participation in international organizations and events. While many use the name Taiwan the country is also known as Republic of China. And apart from the regular paper money, Taiwan also has another type of banknotes – Joss paper – which are burned in honour of ancestors, gods or ghosts. Concept Development In general, burning such symbolic objects is an act of denying or shaming the national identity. In Taiwan, however, burning has a double connotation of both protest and blessing. The project employs the colour black as a metaphor for burning, with ‘rebirth’ as the core concept. It presents a ground-breaking concept for the expression of nationality, incorporating different stages of Taiwan’s colonial past. The aim is to reinterpret the Taiwanese identities that have been denied, accepted or ‘forgotten’. Through site visits to Jiantanshan and the former Taiwan Grand Shrine, the team explored the painting’s ‘orderliness’ via visual, sound, and bodily expressions. Three artists led a field study, culminating in events: Learn from Forest (group study), Prologue (performance), Sketch from Forest (workshops), Listen from Forest (sound performance), and Talk from Forest (discussions). Concept development Inspired by the painting ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ (1928) by Hsueh-Hu Kuo (1908-2012) of the TFAM collection, the winning team of X-site organized the public program of five events entitled&nbsp;Sublime Project during the exhibition period of Analogue Forest. The team attempts to conduct an on-site study–returning to the original sites such as the Jiantanshan Hiking Trail and Taiwan Grand Shrine (now the Grand Hotel), and analogously identifies or establishes, by visual expression, sound creation, and corporal sensation, the ‘orderliness’ in the natural landscape illustrated in the painting. ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ pivots on the public program which encourages a ‘group study in the field’ as the first step of enlightenment. Three invited artists of different disciplines will launch a field study to observe from various perspectives of art and to elaborate on the following events: natural nutrients cultivated from a ‘group study in the field’ in ‘Learn from forest’; opening performance as indicated in ‘Prologue’; workshops of symbolized vision in ‘Sketch form forest’; sound performance as visualized sound in ‘Listen from forest’, and talks on the subject of forest empathy in ‘Talk from forest’. Starting from the original site of the Jiantanshan Hiking Trail depicted in the painting, the invited artists will translate and create the fruits of the on-site survey from diverse artistic perspectives. The public is invited to join the team of Analogue Forest, departing from the TFAM plaza to take a closer look at the Meiji Bridge (now Zhongshan Bridge) and Taiwan Grand Shrine (now Grand Hotel) and then returning to the Jiantanshan woodland, mixing with non-/natural elements. The itinerary offers an opportunity to compare the ancient and modern rural landscapes in ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ with a nearly hundred-year history. Through a guided tour of the history of humanities and natural features, the two forests are aligned with each other. Correspondances Charles Baudelaire, 1821-1867 In “Prologue” as an opening prelude, the visual artist Yu-Tzu Huang and sound artist Yu-Jung Chen take as a text of inspiration ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ by Hsueh-Hu Kuo and conduct a field survey on the now Jiantanshan Hiking Trail illustrated in the painting. In tune with the poem ‘Correspondances’ by C. Baudelaire, the artists explore the boundary between nature and non-nature with sounds as the overture, paired with a mirror installation, and with luminous ink to replace traditional ink in terms of material culture. She will work with the participants to transform non-physical things in nature and further propose the question: “When a forest fostered by nature turns into one intervened by social consciousness, does such a forest still exist?” The workshop features contemporary ink as a dominant technique, handmade writing tools, and mirror acrylic sheets and luminous ink replacing traditional canvas and ink. The handcrafted output implemented through the body is not only an improvised creation but part of body memory. He wonders “how the familiar soundscape in daily life provokes a new imagination of auditory experiences, through different listening methods and changes in the experience of corporal perceptions.” The artist encodes the sound archives, using multi-channel speakers to simulate the diversity and directionality of natural sounds in interaction with the on-site installation. In the current project, “delay” serves as the core concept of sound creation. It takes advantage of the characteristics of echo and reverberation in sound technology, digitally processing the sounds from the natural ecosystem with about 30-40 small speakers hidden in Analogue Forest. She’s lived with plants and transformed what she saw and felt into works. In this talk, she will read aloud her notes of creation and share her stories of roaming in the forest and creation during the residence programs in the Netherlands, Estonia, Iceland, Taiwan, Japan, and other places. The form of the talk is inspired by the allusions in Aranyaka (Book of the Forest) from the Vedic era in India, which describes the elderly hermits living in the forest, replacing traditional sacrifices as a ritual with meditation–a thought combining ideas from religion, philosophy, and mysticism. In the event, the artist will write long prose about her creation experiences in diverse residence programs and turn it into “a handmade book presented through reading”. Meanwhile, the images and manuscripts of creation during her journeys will be displayed on the screen.&nbsp; In the last five minutes of the talk, the artist will also share with visitors a sound work based on the concept of “sacred trees” that she created during ART ITOYA (residence program) in Japan. burned to transfer its value into the afterlife.During the pandemic in 2022, when I was unable to return to Taiwan from the Netherlands to attend my grandfather’s funeral, the act of folding paper money became a personal ritual of mourning and remembrance. <img width="1024" height="768" width_o="1024" height_o="768" Yuan Bao(金元寶) are some of the paper money commonly used in Taiwan. The original intention behind folding Paper Lotus and Gold Yuan Bao is to provide comfort and prosperity for ancestors in the afterlife, allowing the deceased to purchase luxuries and live more easily in the spiritual world. These offerings also symbolise the devotion and contribution of a family during funeral rituals. Through the continuous manual labour of folding paper money, the work reflects on the relationship between money, spirituality, and ritual, while honouring the memory of her grandfather.
