https://yutzuhuang.com YUTZUHUANG Tue, 26 May 2026 16:56:49 +0000 https://yutzuhuang.com en https://yutzuhuang.com/Perverted-Norm-Normal-Pervert Mon, 28 Jun 2021 11:54:38 +0000 YUTZUHUANG https://yutzuhuang.com/Perverted-Norm-Normal-Pervert Perverted Norm, Normal PervertBook Design Perverted Norm, Normal Pervert is the artist Kuang-Yi Ku’s project inspired by scientific research and explores the normality and abnormality of sexual activities among humans and snails.&nbsp;The book was selected for Tokyo TDC 2022 and&nbsp;was selected for The Best Dutch Book Designs 2023 and exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from October 17, 2024, to January 5, 2025. I collaborated with Ku and explored the appearance, gender and data related to snails and humans, which I illustrated and produced as a book. This bilingual book focuses on gender fluidity, depicting the reproductive system, reproductive structure and mating posture of snails and humans in four chapters with black and white illustrations. On the cover, it attempts to echo the definition of "pervert and normality" explored by the artist by switching the sequence of the Chinese characters "變態的正常". Part of this exhibition presents the pages of the book and shows the interaction of graphic design and three-dimensional objects together with 3D printing and proofing. and Space — Ho Kan &amp; Kwon Soonik exhibition, key visual, visual identity, motion graphic Presented as the annual exhibition of ALIEN Art Centre in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, rekindles the spiritual core of “abstraction” within the East Asian context. The exhibition opens with the works of Ho Kan, a pioneer of geometric abstraction in the Chinese-speaking world, alongside those of Korean contemporary abstract artist Soonik Kwon. Ho Kan constructs “order” through luminous color fields and precise geometric forms, while Kwon materializes the flow of qi on canvas through layered brushwork and tactile textures. The Bards of Time and Space — Ho Kan &amp; Kwon Soonik take place in ALIEN Art Centre from 23 November, 2025 to 1 November, 2026. Comprising 25 tree-like columns with a weightless canopy, the structure sways gently, inviting pedestrians into a realm beyond daily life. The descending canopy forms a central space, contrasting human-scale edges with towering columns, transforming movement into inner exploration. Concept Inspired by the painting ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ (1928) by Hsueh-Hu Kuo (1908-2012) of the TFAM collection, the winning team of X-site organized the public program of five events entitled&nbsp;Sublime Project during the exhibition period of Analogue Forest. The team attempts to conduct an on-site study–returning to the original sites such as the Jiantanshan Hiking Trail and Taiwan Grand Shrine (now the Grand Hotel), and analogously identifies or establishes, by visual expression, sound creation, and corporal sensation, the ‘orderliness’ in the natural landscape illustrated in the painting. ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ pivots on the public program which encourages a ‘group study in the field’ as the first step of enlightenment. Three invited artists of different disciplines will launch a field study to observe from various perspectives of art and to elaborate on the following events: natural nutrients cultivated from a ‘group study in the field’ in ‘Learn from forest’; opening performance as indicated in ‘Prologue’; workshops of symbolized vision in ‘Sketch form forest’; sound performance as visualized sound in ‘Listen from forest’, and talks on the subject of forest empathy in ‘Talk from forest’. Starting from the original site of the Jiantanshan Hiking Trail depicted in the painting, the invited artists will translate and create the fruits of the on-site survey from diverse artistic perspectives. The public is invited to join the team of Analogue Forest, departing from the TFAM plaza to take a closer look at the Meiji Bridge (now Zhongshan Bridge) and Taiwan Grand Shrine (now Grand Hotel) and then returning to the Jiantanshan woodland, mixing with non-/natural elements. The itinerary offers an opportunity to compare the ancient and modern rural landscapes in ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ with a nearly hundred-year history. Correspondances Charles Baudelaire, 1821-1867 In “Prologue” as an opening prelude, the visual artist Yu-Tzu Huang and sound artist Yu-Jung Chen take as a text of inspiration ‘Scenery near Yuan-Shan’ by Hsueh-Hu Kuo and conduct a field survey on the now Jiantanshan Hiking Trail illustrated in the painting. In tune with the poem ‘Correspondances’ by C. Baudelaire, the artists explore the boundary between nature and non-nature with sounds as the overture, paired with a mirror installation, and with luminous ink to replace traditional ink in terms of material culture. She will work with the participants to transform non-physical things in nature and further propose the question: “When a forest fostered by nature turns into one intervened by social consciousness, does such a forest still exist?” The workshop features contemporary ink as a dominant technique, handmade writing tools, and mirror acrylic sheets and luminous ink replacing traditional canvas and ink. The handcrafted output implemented through the body is not only an improvised creation but part of body memory. He wonders “how the familiar soundscape in daily life provokes a new imagination of auditory experiences, through different listening methods and changes in the experience of corporal perceptions.” The artist encodes the sound archives, using multi-channel speakers to simulate the diversity and directionality of natural sounds in interaction with the on-site installation. In the current project, “delay” serves as the core concept of sound creation. It takes advantage of the characteristics of echo and reverberation in sound technology, digitally processing the sounds from the natural ecosystem with about 30-40 small speakers hidden in Analogue Forest. She’s lived with plants and transformed what she saw and felt into works. In this talk, she will read aloud her notes of creation and share her stories of roaming in the forest and creation during the residence programs in the Netherlands, Estonia, Iceland, Taiwan, Japan, and other places. The form of the talk is inspired by the allusions in Aranyaka (Book of the Forest) from the Vedic era in India, which describes the elderly hermits living in the forest, replacing traditional sacrifices as a ritual with meditation–a thought combining ideas from religion, philosophy, and mysticism. In the event, the artist will write long prose about her creation experiences in diverse residence programs and turn it into “a handmade book presented through reading”. Meanwhile, the images and manuscripts of creation during her journeys will be displayed on the screen.&nbsp; In the last five minutes of the talk, the artist will also share with visitors a sound work based on the concept of “sacred trees” that she created during ART ITOYA (residence program) in Japan. some of the paper money commonly used in Taiwan. The original intention behind folding Paper Lotus and Gold Yuan Bao is to provide comfort and prosperity for ancestors in the afterlife, allowing the deceased to purchase luxuries and live more easily in the spiritual world. These offerings also symbolise the devotion and contribution of a family during funeral rituals. In this project, Huang redesigned the graphics of the paper money by incorporating the Wangsheng Mantra and fictional currency denominations that do not exist in reality, reinterpreting the family’s deepest blessings and emotional devotion toward the deceased. Through the continuous manual labour of folding paper money, the work reflects on the relationship between money, spirituality, and ritual, while honouring the memory of her grandfather. Additionally, the typography has been updated from a rounded typeface to a bold sans-serif, shaping a more modern and minimalist brand tone. Collaborating with participants, she explored the transformation of intangible elements in nature, posing the thought-provoking question: “When a forest nurtured by nature becomes one shaped by social consciousness, does it still remain a forest?” She divided the model painting book into 12 templates, with participants unknowingly gathering around the largest tree in the forest, affectionately nicknamed the “Sacred Tree.” The workshop highlighted contemporary ink techniques, handcrafted writing tools, and unconventional materials such as mirror acrylic sheets and luminous ink, replacing traditional canvas and ink. Through hands-on creation, participants engaged in an improvisational process that merged artistic expression with body memory. By utilizing luminous ink’s spectral properties, they depicted the shifting nature of the forest between day and night, encouraging reflection on their personal connection with nature.&nbsp; <img social media, rather than being conceived as a book from the start. These works document marginalized communities within Russian society, including workers and political dissidents, offering a rare and unfiltered perspective rarely seen in mainstream media.&nbsp;Later, these contents were compiled into a book, further expanding its influence. Although it has been translated into multiple languages, it has never been published in Russia. However, it was finally released in Traditional Chinese at the end of last year. &nbsp; &nbsp; Design This book, published by Hide &amp; Seek Audiovisual Art, was designed collaboratively by me and designer Chen Jen from Limestone Books Maastricht. Through discussions with the editor, we decided to use the dialogue boxes from the documentary comics of&nbsp; Other Russians as the central theme of the cover. The cover features a stone that seems to have been thrown, stacked into a wall by the people—symbolizing a barrier that keeps people both trapped inside and unable to enter. The cover also includes two opposing processions: the May 6, 2012 Million-Strong March in support of Pussy Riot and the September 15, 2012 nationalist march. These are represented as the only color pages in the book.
